3 Ways to Create a WordPress Website from a Graphic Design

The first step to creating a website is to design it. How is your WordPress website going to look? What functions do you want it to have? It may be a complex or simple site, but it should definitely be sketched out and thought through before the next step. And by that we mean, of course, building the actual website. But hold on, there are several ways to do that.

Page builders

The easiest way to create a WordPress website from graphic design is by using a page builder, also called a visual builder, like Elementor or Divi. This is a drag-and-drop tool that allows you to build a website with a click. This is definitely good news for people with zero coding experience. You don’t need to know HTML, CSS or PHP. The bad news is that it’s a very restricting solution – builders like these have a limited number of options you can implement. We’ve already written a whole post about it, so we won’t elaborate much on this topic here. Just remember that while it’s an excellent option for non-developers, you won’t be able to recreate your graphic design accurately. You’ll only be able to build a WordPress website resembling it using elements available in the page builder of your choice.

Child themes

A more advanced option would be to create a child theme. What is a child theme? You take a WordPress theme you like and make changes to it, like adding a section or changing the colour, so that it’s more to your liking. The modifications are saved as a child theme with no changes to the parent theme (the one used as the base). This option requires some coding knowledge – nothing too fancy, but basic CSS and HTML skills are a must here. Here, you’re a bit closer to recreating your design, but you still won’t be able to do it perfectly. That’s where the last option comes in.

Custom themes

The last option and our personal favourite is a dedicated WordPress theme. Here, the only limitations are your or your developer’s coding skills. A custom theme means you can build a website identical to your graphic design. But here, coding knowledge is essential, so you need to be comfortable with HTML, CSS and PHP. This option might require you to hire a developer, though we believe that a development agency will be a better fit than freelance or in-house developer.

No choice is the best one. We are committed fans of custom themes, but the choice you make will depend on your coding abilities, budget, or timeframe.

No choice is the best one. We are committed fans of custom themes, but the choice you make will depend on your coding abilities, budget, or timeframe. Maybe a page builder is enough for you at this moment. However, if you’re thinking of expanding your WordPress website sometime in the future, it might be better to actually invest in a dedicated solution that can be adjusted.
